“For God and Country”, that is the motto of the American Legion Post Number 1 located in the Community Hall in Van Tassel. The American Legion Post Number 1 was not only the first Post in Wyoming, but it was the first American Legion Post formed in the nation. Niobrara County resident Dale Miller is the current elected Post Commander alongside his fellow officers Donald Heckert; First Vice Commander, Terri Davis; Adjutant, and William Matthews; Chaplain. Currently, the Post has roughly thirty-eight veteran members. As of right now, the Post is meeting every six months but new Commander Miller is hoping to change that, first to every three months and then to every month as participation grows.
In fact, Miller has a couple of ideas to get the Post going, beginning with his most important; letting local veteran’s know that the Post is there and ready to go to work for them. “We are a veteran service organization for the veterans to help veterans get their benefits that are due” states Miller. Part of the project will be to get veterans from the Niobrara community to step forward; as Miller makes clear the veterans do not have to belong to the Post for the Post to assist them. The Post is prepared to help veterans with a variety of topics, “Financial, medical, any other critical need that a veteran would need we will try to get him help. These guys come back from overseas with PTSD and if they don’t know how to get help we are here to help them do that. If they need to talk or whatever. We’ll do everything that we can possibly do to help out a veteran” states Miller.
Veterans that are in need of assistance with any problem, per Miller, are encouraged to contact him at 307-334-9918 or to contact the Commander of the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) Ed Tirado at 307-340-1420.
