Last weekends’ games were stark contrasts of each other, as the win over Southeast was crucial but Lusk didn’t do as well in Pine Bluffs. The split leaves the Lady Tigers at 5-2 in conference games with just one game left in the regular season. NCHS has all but clinched the two seed for regionals but can’t let up against Glenrock this Friday night at Tiger Gym.

Despite losing to the Lady Tigers in Yoder last month and two losses last week, Southeast was still ranked in the Wyopreps top 5. NCHS took a 14-7 first quarter lead behind Miranda Gilkey and Emma Ceaglske’s combined ten points. The Lady Cyclones got within 18-16 on Gilkey’s third foul, but Lusk held on to the 21-19 lead at halftime.

A Ceaglske trey gave the Lady Tigers the lead back, and for good at 24-23 with 5:23 left in the period. Gaukel sank a jumper and the free throw and NCHS led 34-27 with eight minutes to play. The sophomore swished a triple to push it to an eight point lead, and the Lady Tigers made eight of ten free throws to cement the 47-34 win. This is the first time since the 2002-03 season Lusk has swept SE in the regular season.

SCORE BY QUARTERS

SE 7 12 8 7 34

NCHS 14 7 13 13 47

TEAM STATS

SE: 11/46 FG, 1/10 3PT, 11/20 FT, 37 REB, 15 PF, 11 TO

NCHS: 17/42 FG, 2/9 3PT, 11/18 FT, 34 REB, 15 PF, 14 TO

NCHS PLAYER STATS: Scoring- Gaukel 15, Gilkey 12, Trisha Hales 9, Ceaglske 7, Amanda Smith 3, Ashley Christianson 1. Rebounds- Gaukel 8, Smith 7, Hales 6. Good sportsmanship players of the game: Gaukel and Ellie Schmidt from SE.

Saturday’s game at the Hornet’s Nest was very similar to the eight point game in Lusk last month…for two quarters. Pfister knocked down a pair of three pointers and Hales added another as the Lady Tigers were down just three after one period. The offenses kept it up in the second as PB held on to a slim 34-30 lead at the half.

The 15 minute break was just enough to get the home team fired up while the Lady Tigers came out flat. The undefeated, defending state champs, on Senior Night put the game away with a 22-0 blitz through the third quarter. As the PB seniors went to the bench, Lusk was able to cut the deficit into a 67-47 final score in the loss.
