LUSK – The Niobrara County Library helps raise the next generation of readers through a 1,000 book challenge.
In an effort to encourage children and parents of the community to spend more time reading together, the Niobrara County Library Foundation provides books to kids who meet reading goals. The “One More Page: 1,000 Books before Kindergarten” program challenges families to read 1,000 books before youngsters enter kindergarten.
While the thought of reading that many books in what seems like a short period of time may be overwhelming, Niobrara County Library’s website simplifies it a bit. The website says, “if you read just one book a night, you will have read 365 books in a year, that is 720 books in two years, and 1,095 in three years.”
The library offers log sheets for families to keep track of how many books they read, with prizes after every 100 books. Library staff encourage families to come in to check out books from the library to make it fun and exciting for the kids. Any child is eligible to participate as long as they have not started kindergarten.
