2A State Golf runner-up finishes for the Lady Tigers and Micah Shaner

Posted

LUSK- The Tiger and Lady Tiger golf teams played in the 2A State Golf Tournament at the Newcastle Country Club this past Friday and Saturday.  The Lady Tigers stayed close the whole way but finished as runner-up Champions and the boys finished in 8th place.  Micah Shaner had another great performance finishing runner-up in the individual competition.

On Friday the girls found themselves in 3rd place following a 110 from Mackenzie Lyons, 111 from Makena Engelker, and a 129 from Jozalyn Potter.  They were 14 strokes out of first place and 2 strokes from second place.   After Nine holes on Saturday they had cut the lead to 7 strokes but the Wright girls finished strong and ended up 30 strokes ahead of the Lady Tigers.   Saturday scores for the Lady Tigers were Mackenzie Lyons with a 114, Makena Engelker with a 114 and Jozalyn Potter with a 119.  Those scores placed both Mackenzie and Makena on the All-State team.   This was the third year in a row for Mackenzie, who placed 6th, and Makena, who placed 7th, earned her first All-State Award after only starting to play golf a year ago.

For the boys, Micah Shaner shot an 85 on Friday, leaving him in 3rd place and only one stroke out of 2nd place.  Even though he shot a 92 on Saturday that was good enough to climb into 2nd place as almost all of the scores were higher on day two.  Runner-up in the State is a great accomplishment for only starting to play two years ago.  The other three boys were playing in their first State Tournament and the nerves definitely played a part in their scores.  Ben Eiden shot 118 on Friday and a 114 on Saturday.  Jayden Matthews shot a 126 on Friday and a 131 on Saturday.  Jayden had only been playing for 6 weeks so those were actually quite good for the experience he had.  Dalton Larson shot a 142 on Friday including a 59 on the front nine which is his low for nine holes this season and then he shot 157 on Saturday.

That brings the 2018 season to a close and the Golf Team would like to Thank the Town of Lusk and Niobrara Country Club for all of the support throughout the season.  The use of their facilities is very much appreciated.
