LUSK – “Which came first, the chicken or the egg?” is an age-old riddle and a bit of a joke however, knowledge of chick production was taken very seriously by the attendees of Friday’s 4-H Friday activity, egg incubation and
hick hatching.
Friday’s lesson, in addition to cooking, included information and a project guide for hatching eggs in an incubator. Megan Brittingham was present to walk the kids through the process of incubating and hatching eggs. She brought viable eggs with her and discussed all the steps necessary to successfully hatch chicks including humidity levels (and why moisture is needed), temperatures, egg rotation and embryo development.
Kids received a project guide that will help them track incubator temperature, humidity levels, and journal the events of the next 21 days as they anticipate their chicks hatching. Brittingham also discussed how chicks hatch (using their egg tooth) and what to expect when they emerge.
