4-H hosts activity day

NIOBRARA COUNTY – Niobrara County 4-H hosted the second Activity 4-H Day on Thursday June 10 at the Niobrara County Fairgrounds. The 4-H members learned about the importance of eating whole grains and about many different grains and then got to try some for lunch. The theme of this activity day was “ancient grains.” Members learned how to cook with these different grains including: spelt, whole wheat, emmer, farro, quinoa, purple prairie barley and lentils.

After learning how to incorporate healthy, whole grains in different types of salads, scones, muffins and other baked goods the members enjoyed an afternoon craft. Wool roving pumpkins with different colors of wool thread was a new craft most of the kids had never done. By the end there were a variety of different wool felted vegetables and other creations for them to take home after they are entered in the county fair. Members who attended were: Addy Matthews, Jon Schardt, Krista Schardt, Sydney Southwick, Miranda Smith, Bryn Bruch, Fionna Kerkes and Hannah Kerkes. On June 23, the third 4-H Activity Day was held at the Niobrara County Fairgrounds. The 4-H’ers each created unique painted canvases using the Mandala techniques. Each participant then created a fair themed four tiled mural using acrylic paints and coasters to enter at fair. This year’s fair theme is “Wham, Boom, Pow – a Superhero County Fair.”

They prepared gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches for lunch where everyone enjoyed chocolate and cheese chaffles for lunch. The members then enjoyed an afternoon spa day where they learned how to make lotion bars and chap stick using beeswax and cocoa butter. They also made lemon scented sugar hand scrubs and lemon scented bath bombs.
