Niobrara County High School (NCHS) will grow by roughly twenty-three students next year as this years’ Lusk Elementary/Middle School (LEMS) 8th grade students celebrated their 8th grade promotion last week. Held in the gym of LEMS, the choir opened in song for the celebrating class followed by a speech from Mrs. Lyons wherein she introduced the first of seven to present speeches to their fellow classmates and those in attendance to support them. Students talked about what they had learned in their time at LEMS, memories—mainly consisting of Mallo Camp and Mr. Diercks’ class—and they paid homage to a teacher who will be retiring after 37 years in the system: Mr. Diercks. Of the twenty-three that make up the class, fifteen is the original number. Ms. Tucker was also acknowledged as a teacher who will be retiring this year and at the conclusion of speeches, she was presented with flowers. After stories of his singing and his Saint Patties day accent, Mr. Diercks received a quilt that the students worked together to make. Following the seven speeches, a PowerPoint presentation was given showing how far and what the students have accomplished over the better half of their academic careers. At the conclusion of the PowerPoint, LEMS principal—and the upcoming Superintendent, George Mirich addressed the class and presented the Friends of the School Award to Heather Goddard who has stepped up to assist in the music program along with volunteering her time. Mirich also presented the Middle School Leadership Award, one to a girl and one to a boy who actively steps up to participate in school and the community. These awards went to Walker Kupke and Jaeden Stauffer respectively. The Niobrara County School Board members presented the certificates to the students as one-by-one their names were called. Another song closed out the ceremony and the students headed to line the cafeteria where a beverage and dessert reception was held. The new freshman class will be the class of 2022.
