Three years ago started the Alumni Golf Tournament, held in memory of 1994 Niobrara County High School graduate, Jeremy Wasson. “The class of 1994 discussed doing a golf tournament in memory of our classmate, Jeremy Wasson. There was talk between members of the class of 2000 completing a golf tournament during Alumni weekend as a means of getting more alumni events which would get more alumni involved with reunion weekend and bring more money to the community” states Katy (Gibson) Skibicki, NCHS class of 1994 and Alumni Golf Tournament Board Member. As a whole, the board is comprised of Ryan Rapp, Jason Wasserburger, Tandy (Rising) Dockery, Kade (Sharp) Walters, Stephanie (Cumming) Vetter, and Skibicki.
Originally, per Skibicki, the tournament was set up to accommodate eighteen golfers with proceeds benefiting the Niobrara Alumni Association. However, since its beginning, the tournament has grown and this year the Alumni Golf Tournament boasted nine new teams, totaling thirty-six. “There were two flights of eighteen teams [that went] at 8:00am and 1:30pm” explains Skibicki. In addition, the tournament held several contests throughout the course, including a hole-in-one prize on Hole 5 and “On Hole 8, the contest was closest to the bowling pin whereas years before it was closest to the pin in two”. For an additional $50.00 fee, the men could also use the women’s t-off on Hole 4.
The Alumni Golf Tournament Board was pleased to announce that $7000.00 was donated to the Niobrara Alumni Association for the scholarship fund and $1000.00 went to the Niobrara County High School Activity Fund. With the success that the tournament had this year with the thirty-six teams and the tournament set up, Skibicki says the tournament will hold the same format next year. “The committee members would like to thank all the golfers and sponsors. Without them, we would not be able to have a successful event and meet our goals for donating to support former and current NCHS students”.
