DOES sell Christmas trees for cause

Posted

A room full of people turned out for the annual DOES Christmas Tree Decorating Contest and Auction. Those who participated in decorating had the choice to enter a tree, wreath, stocking, or centerpiece. Contestants were required to decorate their item with their chosen theme and deposit them to the Elks’ Lodge for judging on Saturday, December 2. Following judging by a panel of three judges including Linda Binkley, Becky Freeman, and Cassandra Matney, People’s Choice was also awarded during the open social hour before the auction. After the social hour each article, including a few designed by the DOES themselves, were auctioned off. Money raised will go as a donation to both the NCHS school lunch program and the new Infinite Heroes organization that DOES will be coordinating with. A high bidder for the night was Sarah Jo Goddard who walked away with three Christmas trees including the People’s Choice winner entitled ‘Peacock Party’ and the special DOES ‘Silver Bells’ themed tree that included over twenty handmade ornaments by Robin Jeffcoat, and ‘Peppermint Christmas’. For the contest itself, the winning tree was ‘Hark the Herald Angles Sing’ featuring handmade Christmas angles constructed from The Lusk Herald by The Lusk Herald. Second place was ‘Peacock Party’ by Dena Retzlaff and honorable mention went to ‘Copper Christmas’ Kathleen Smolik. In the wreath/stocking/centerpiece division was Dena Retzlaff with ‘Americana’ wreath in first, ‘Gingerbread’ wreath by Sheila Tangney was second, and Same As It Once was third with their birch and pine centerpiece. The event is the main fundraiser for the DOES Drove #64. The DOES is an organization in partnership with the Elks and thrives in helping the community, holding their annual bake sale, works with the veterans, Dogs for the Hearing Impaired, and their newest partnership, Infinite Heroes; an organization dedicated to veterans and their families. Always looking for new members, those interested can contact Amanda Dawson, DOES President.
