FFA week encourages agriculture in school

Posted

Most people won’t kiss a goat in their lifetime, however one lucky student at Niobrara County High School (NCHS) will get the honor of doing that after the food drive is finished.

The NCHS local FFA chapter hosted a dress-up week in order to celebrate National FFA week February 17 through 24. Schools throughout the nation found fun and quirky ways to celebrate agriculture throughout the week. At NCHS some of the students participated in dressing up during the week.

To start off the week students dressed up in blue and gold and the officers wore official dress, which is black skirts and slacks with a white long sleeve shirt with the blue corduroy jacket with gold embellishments. Unfortunately many of the FFA students were unable to participate; due to inclement weather, buses didn’t run and out-of-town students had a snow day.

On Tuesday the students dressed up as farmers, and on Wednesday they dressed as the farmer’s animals. Pearl snap and flannel shirts were the suggested attire on Thursday and there was no school on Friday due to regional basketball.

The morning of February 28, FFA members gathered to cook a breakfast of chapter-grown pork including bacon and sausage, six-dozen home-grown eggs that Sena Pearson generously donated, and pancakes for NCHS students and staff.

FFA members also cooked smothered pork chops from the aforementioned animal with FBLA and FCCLA providing a side and dessert for the school board meeting on February 26.

The members wanted to benefit the community by encouraging NCHS students to donate canned or non-perishable food items which will later be donated to the local food pantry. To try to get more students and teachers to participate the losing class’ president or teacher of members choice will get the honor of kissing a goat. The teachers lost so Mr. Wood gets to kiss the goat. The science teacher Mrs. Weisbeck also awarded 20 extra credit points to each student who brought in at least five items.

At the last meeting we talked about preparing for state convention April 18-21. We will be attending practice competitions from now up until convention.
