God’s purse

Posted

Luke 12:33, 34 “Sell your possessions and give to charity; make yourselves purses which do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven where no thief comes near, nor moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”

As a woman who cares a lot about purses and carefully fills them with everything, I think I will need for the day, that verse got me thinking about what God has to do with my purses. I began thinking first about what things I do think are necessities in my purse, and then wondering what is important about that to God. Am I filling my purse with what concerns God? If I think of it as God’s purse, what can I put in it that concerns Him?

One thing that is very important to me is my lipstick. Its purpose is to make our mouth pretty, but God is more concerned about what comes out of it than how it looks to others. Am I using it to encourage others that I meet during the day or to give a smile to those people I meet along the way? I’m sure He would prefer my lips to share His Word and bring blessings to those people He puts in my path. When I put my lipstick on each day, it’s important to ask God for the opportunity to use those lips for His purpose.

A comb is also important to help untangle my hair when a gust of wind comes along. It’s also good to remember if there are any tangled relationships in my life that need straightened out. It’s a good reminder to ask Him to give us guidance and love as He brings things to mind that need to be dealt with.

Of course, I carry a billfold, I can’t leave home without money, and I’m a real “sale” shopper; I love to save money where I can. And that money that I saved can go a long way to help others who are not as fortunate as we are. God provides us with many circumstances that need our help, and He gives each of us a desire to help the ones that peak our interest the most. Everything I have comes from His Hand, and I only need to ask what He wants me to do with it and He will make it known.

I have so many allergies that I always have at least one hanky in my purse. It reminds me that sometimes we feel hurts along the way and have to allow ourselves to be vulnerable. There may be tears from some of those hurts, but God is the great healer that can help us work through those hurts and comfort and guide us. It’s important to remember that when we are hurt, we don’t have to hurt back, we can choose to let God help us to love and forgive and to pray for the person who hurt us. It’s our choice.

We all carry a phone with us these days and, aside from keeping in touch at all times, our phone has a camera that we can use wherever we are. Those pictures help us keep the memories we are making along the way. Nothing in life is a waste if it makes a memory, because good or bad we can learn from it. Each lasting memory can be an experience to learn from, and there are lots of life lessons along the way. It’s wonderful to see the picture later and remember how God worked during that time.

We sometimes carry a little medicine with us, some prescriptions or aspirin that we may need along the way. I always think, too, to take laughter with you, it’s a great medicine, and it has a way of relaxing us and keeping us positive. But God is the Great Physician, He can give us relief from the pains of life, the emptiness we sometimes feel, the discouragement that sometimes comes. Meeting with Him daily is the best medicine we can take for the life struggles we encounter.

Sometimes we take a little perfume with us, just to refresh our scent if we are to be gone for a while. 2Corin.2:14,15 “But thanks be to God, who always leads us in His triumph in Christ, and manifests through us the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him in every place, for we are a fragrance of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing…” The lasting fragrance of the sweetness of the Lord Jesus is not a surface fragrance, but a fragrance of the heart. It is a fragrance of love, pure and lasting. 1Corin 16:14 “Let all that you do be done in love.”

I need to begin to think of myself as God’s purse, with everything I have being available to Him to use however He needs me. My lips to speak His word, my money for His use, my hands at the ready, my heart turned towards Him, and all that I have ready for Him to pull out and use. What can I give him to use today? May I choose to say, Yes Lord! Use me! What we put in our “God’s Purse” today is our gift to God that will be our “treasure in heaven.”
