LUSK – The Niobrara Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3511, American Legion Post No. 1, Van Tassell, American Legion Post No. 4, Lusk, the VFW Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 1, Van Tasselll, hosted the Veterans’ Annual Picnic at the Best Western Pioneer Court in Lusk. Hamburgers and hotdogs and drinks were provided by the hosts and attendees were encouraged to bring side dishes.

The VFW and the VFW Auxiliary had their July meetings. VFW Department of Wyoming Adjutant/Quartermaster, Ron Steffensmeier, was a special guest at the picnic. The Commanders asked their members to attend meetings and encouraged them to be more visible in the communities. VFW Commander, Ed Tirado, briefed everyone on the Memorial Day activities and on the condition of the Veterans’’ Memorial at the Lusk Cemetery.

The Veterans’ Memorial is not handicapped accessible and is in need of maintenance. The Memorial has chipped paint, cracked plexiglass, non-matching font and dead bugs in the display cases. A member tripped over the stairs on the Memorial and had a bad fall on Memorial Day. The concerned attendees agreed to form a committee to spearhead both the improvement to the memorial and to build other veterans’ memorials in the cemeteries throughout the county.

Ron Steffensmeier said there might be matching state or national funds available. A discussion ensued and a consensus was reached the memorial should be cleaned this fall.

It was further agreed that each organization conduct fund raisers to aid in the remodel efforts and the community should be made aware of the condition of the memorial and the committee’s efforts to repair it. It was further suggested the whole memorial be razed and be rebuilt in a handicapped accessible manner.

The Committee members are Ed Tirado, Dale Miller, Jim Thorbjornsen, Pat Smith, and Sandy Smith. If you have ideas, suggestions or want to help financially or by volunteering please feel free to contact the committee members.

The Veterans’ picnic is an annual event open to veterans, their families, widow/widowers of veterans and conducted every July.
