PINE BLUFF – Ninety seconds into the game against Pine Bluffs, Phoebe Allbright knocked down a 3-pointer, yet the 5-5 tie was as close as Niobrara County High School would get last Friday in the Hornet’s Nest.
With All-State player Jaden Shelit nowhere to be seen, the Lady Hornets went on an 18-0 run to finish the period. Lusk struggled with ten turnovers in the half but stopped Pine Bluff’s scoring run. At halftime the score was 34-12.
Pine Bluffs backed off the pressure after the break but extended their lead by six points in the third. Allbright banked in a trey, but it wasn’t enough to spark a run at the Lady Hornets in the 60-28 loss.
The Lady Tigers open the 2A East Regional Tournament on Thursday afternoon. Burns High School is the site as NCHS faces Sundance in the opening round at 4 p.m. If Lusk wins, they will face the Pine Bluffs/Wright winner at 4 p.m. Friday in Pine Bluffs. A loss sends the Lady Tigers into the consolation bracket at 9 a.m. Friday morning, again at the Hornet’s Nest. Ticket prices and tournament brackets are available at whsaa.org.
