Lady Tigers split Homecoming matches

LUSK – Thursday evening at Tiger Gym, the Niobrara County High School volleyball team made their home debut. Crawford, Nebraska was the opponent and both schools had vocal cheering sections.

The visitors took the upper hand first, but the Lady Tigers never let the lead get past five points. NCHS tied the set at 22 before the Lady Rams won 25-23.

The second set was another close affair as the teams traded leads before a 13-13 tie. After a timeout, Crawford went on a 12-3 run to take a two set lead.

Early in the third set, Jaden Stauffer pushed the Lady Tigers out in front to stay with five in a row from the service line. Strong net play from the ZumBrunnen sisters kept Lusk in front for the 25-18 win.

As with the first three sets, the fourth one was a tight back and forth battle and knotted at 12. The senior-laden Lady Rams used their experience to make a 13-3 run to win three games to one.

On Friday the Lady Tigers traveled to Guernsey-Sunrise and had little trouble with the Lady Vikings in the three set sweep. Lusk won by scores of 25-10, 25-12 and 25-15.

NCHS TEAM STATS: Serving - 65/73, 21 aces; 10 kills/63 atts; 7 assists; Digs - 67/82.

NCHS PLAYER STATS: Serving - G. ZumBrunnen 18/18, 5 aces; Paige Potter 8/8; A. DesEnfants 14/15; E. DesEnfants 11/12, 6 aces; Allbright 7/9, 5 aces. Digs- M. ZumBrunnen 19; E. DesEnfants 18.

The junior varsity team dropped the first set to Crawford 25-17 but came back to win the match with 25-23 and 25-12 scores. At Guernsey they won the first set 25-9 before letting the second set slip away in the 25-22 score. They rebounded to take the match with a 25-11 win.

This is a busy week for the Lady Tigers, as they host Pine Bluffs Thursday evening and then travel to the Big Horn tournament. NCHS is in a pool with Wright, Riverside and Greybull for Friday before bracket play on Saturday. The JV will also get plenty of games in at the tournament.
