Lady Tigers split weekend conference games

Posted

After home losses to Pine Bluffs and Southeast during Homecoming week, the NCHS volleyball team went to PB and hosted Glenrock most recently. With the 2A East Regional just two weeks away, Lusk is in need of hitting their peak soon. The Lady Tigers are 3-3 in conference play and still in contention for a high seed.

Friday at the difficult Hornet’s Nest, the Lady Tigers came out swinging and took the first set 25-17 before the home team tied the match with a 25-19 win. The third set was as good as it gets as the teams battled back and forth. Several witnesses noted the line judge play was questionable down the stretch as PB won 28-26. As the momentum shifted, NCHS could not muster enough to extend it to a fifth set in falling 25-15.

NCHS TEAM STATS: Serving 77/82, 16 aces, 92 percent; 24 kills/122 atts, 20 percent; 24 assists; 6 blocks; 66/104 digs.

NCHS PLAYER STATS: Serving- Ashley Christianson 13/13; Trisha Hales 8/8; Amanda Smith 22/24, 6 aces; Taylor Gaukel 9/10, Miranda Gilkey 17/19. Kills- Gaukel 6, Smith 6, Hales 5. Assists- Christianson 15; Emma Ceaglske 7. Blocks- Smith 4. Digs- Smith 21; Gilkey 15; Gaukel 10; Hales 10.

The Lady Herders took NCHS to five sets a couple weeks ago and beat PB in five sets- so should not be taken too lightly-especially as the biggest school in the conference. The visitors were in control early as Lusk seemed unfocused and slow to the ball. Glenrock led all the way up to 18 before Gaukel served up three points and Hales stuck one to the floor. Gilkey finished the comeback with a kill down the side for the 25-21 win.

The visitors again took the lead in the second set before the Lady Tigers tied it at 13 on a shot Molzahn hammered down. After a timeout, Glenrock would not go away and was helped by several NCHS miscues as they tied the match at one with the 25-22 win.

Lusk got a fast start with better net activity from Smith, Hales, Mohzahn and Gilkey. Hales dropped a pair of shots down to put NCHS us 11-5 before a sudden lapse. Glenrock took the lead at 19-18, and the set was tied at 22 before a big block from Molzahn and Smith helped Lusk go ahead 24-23. Hales was then set up by Christianson for the kill and 27-25 win and 2-1 lead.

Glenrock had their last and largest lead at 14-10 before a Molzahn rocket spurted a 10-3 run. After a timeout Gaukel put the Lady Herders on their heels with a kill to make it 22-18. Hales finished off the match moments later in the 25-19 win.

NCHS TEAM STATS: Serving- 79/83, 10 aces, 95 percent; 44 kills/132 atts, 32 percent; 38 assists; 10 blocks; 98/145 digs, 68 percent.

NCHS PLAYER STATS: Serving- Gaukel 13/13; Christianson 11/11; Gilkey 19/20, 3 aces; Smith 15/16; Ceaglske 11/13, 2 aces. Kills- Gaukel 12; Gilkey 8; Hales 8; Molzahn 8; Smith 7; Ceaglske 1. Assists- Christianson 20; Ceaglske 14. Blocks- Smith 4; Gilkey 3. Digs- Smith 24; Gilkey 22; Hales 18; Gaukel 12.

On Saturday the Lady Tigers host Burns for Senior Day. In addition to the volleyball seniors- football, golf and cross country athletes will be honored together as the class of 2018. C-squad begins at 1 p.m., followed by JV, Senior Day ceremonies and varsity around 3 for the Class of ‘18’s final volleyball game at Tiger Gym.
