Legend gives back

Posted

Every year the Legend of Rawhide gives monetary donations back to the community. Many know about the scholarship program, some have even benefited from it. The Legend of Rawhide Scholarship is set up to benefit those that have actively participated in the Legend. The numbers of scholarships given depends each year on the amount of applicants, but the Legend tries to spread the money as far as possible with both an Education Award, those just graduating high school, and a Continuing Education Award, for those continuing their degrees and for non-traditional students. The amount of money given to each scholarship also varies from year to year. The 2018 recipients for the Education Award were: $500.00 to Dylann Miller and Garrett Wurdeman and $300.00 to Emma Ceaglske, Makayla Waldock, Miranda Gilkey, and Trisha Hales. Continuing Education Award was $500.00 to Katelynn Miller.

What many don’t know is the numerous other ways the Legend Board gives back. It starts with brining business to town. There is no way of knowing exactly how many people, or a dollar figure, that Legend brings in for the weekend, but the stands are always packed and with the majority of the community in the show, you can bet a lot of them are travelers. That’s money spent on hotels, local merchandise memorabilia, and food from restaurants; all of which goes back into our communities’ pocket. Another way the board gives back is through the thousands of hours of volunteer work from the community and Legend Board Members making the Legend come together. And then there is the money. Over the past twenty years, the Legend of Rawhide Board has donated over $250,000.00 back into the community. That money has gone to benefit the Lusk Volunteer Fire Department, children based activities, flood victims, the high school gym floor, senior trip, the library, museum, Lusk Police Department, school programs, and the Mounted Shooters event. In addition, the Legend also paid for a CAT scan machine for the hospital and every year the Legend gives towards fairground improvements. When asked if there are any requirements for the funding that the Legend has given back, particularly naming the Legend as a donor, the board unanimously answered back, “No, the Legend prefers to stay behind the scenes”.
