The library will be closed on Tuesday, January 1st, 2019 for New Year’s. Normal hours resume at noon on Wednesday, January the 2nd. Happy New Year!

It’s time to register for the winter book discussion series, “Pulitzer Prize” winning books. The first book will feature the History winner from 2016, “Custer’s Trials: A Life on the Frontier of a New America” by T.J. Stiles. This is a rich and surprising new telling of the journey of the iconic American soldier whose death turns out not to have been the main point of his life. Stop by the library to pick up the first book and to register. “Custer’s Trials” will be discussed on Monday, February 4 at 6 p.m.; Barb Baker returns to lead the discussion series.

Registration is also now being taken for the winter afterschool series which will be held from 3:35 to 4:45 p.m. Children in grades K-2 will meet on Tuesdays, January 8 through February 19 for “Around the World.” Children will explore globes and the seven continents. The theme for 3-6 grades is “Solve a Mystery” and will be held Thursdays from January 10 through February 21 with lots of science experiments planned as they delve in the worlds of engineers. Family histories are welcome, if you would like to add yours please let us know!

A new novel by Allen Eskens is “The Shadows We Hide.” Joe Talbert, Jr. never met his namesake. Now out of college and a cub reporter in Minneapolis he stumbles across a story describing the murder of a man named Joseph Talbert in a small town in southern Minnesota. Full of curiosity about whether this man might be his father, Joe is shocked to find that the town residents felt this man’s death was long overdue. He tries to put together the missing pieces of his family history – before his investigation risks putting him in a grave of his own. This book is also available digitally in Overdrive/Libby.

Other new titles are “Rogue Gunslinger” by B. J. Daniels, “Riders on the Orphan Train” by Alison Moore, “Elevation” by Stephen King, “Bathed in Prayer” by Jan Karon, “The Billionaire Bull Rider” by Kate Pearce, “Sunset Wins” by Max Brand, “Wyoming Legend” by Diana Palmer, “A Seat by the Hearth” by Amy Clipston and “Forever and a Day” by Anthony Horowitz. The second book in Rachel Vincent’s “Menagerie” series, “Spectacle” is now available in the YA section along with Rick Riordan’s newest addition to the “Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard” series, “9 From the Nine Worlds: Stories.”

New non-fiction titles are “Feel Better and Make it Last” by Daniel G. Amen, “American Entrepreneur: How 400 Years of Risk-Takers, Innovators, and Business Visionaries Built the U.S.A.” by Willie Robertson and “In Extremis: The Life and Death of the War Correspondent Marie Colvin” by Lindsey Hilsum.

The Lennea Lewis Slagle Children’s Library has these new junior books, “Knights vs. Dinosaurs” by Matt Phelan, “Dust Storm” by Terry Lynn Johnson, and “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: the Meltdown” by Jeff Kinney. Several of the newer easy titles are “Piglets vs. Pugs” by Julie Beer, “Holes in the Sky” by Patricia Polacco, “But Not the Armadillo” by Sandra Boynton and “Do Frogs Drink Hot Chocolate?: How Animals Keep Warm” by Etta Kaner.

There will be no Storyhour on Tuesday, January 1, 2019 as the library will be closed. Storyhour resume on Tuesday, January 8 at 10 a.m. Call 334-3274 to hear a recorded story anytime! Dial-A-Story is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.
