NCHS goes 4-1 at LFL tourney

Posted

The Lady Tiger volleyball season got underway last Fri. against most of the 1A NE and an early season game against the new look defending 2A state champs from Sundance. NCHS spent Fri. at the Lingle-Ft. Laramie Tournament to open 2018 and came away with four wins in five matches.

First on the docket was Upton- a 2A team Lusk faced 5 times last year, but the Lady Bobcats are back in 1A, after the latest reclassification. The Lady Tigers handled Upton in two sets by 25-15 and 25-24 scores, before sweeping Hulett 25-17 and 25-23. Midwest also fell in two sets 25-15 and 25-13.

Sundance was expecting the departure of many talented seniors from last year’s squad but the transfer of junior Rigan McInerney to Thunder Basin caught many by surprise. They were the first team to win a set over Lusk this year as they took the first one 25-19. The Lady Tigers responded with 25-24 and 15-11 wins to gain the match. Odds are very good that these two will see each other again.

Last on the schedule, an exhausted NCHS group of girls faced Kaycee and stumbled by 25-21 and 25-18 scores.

NCHS TEAM STATS: 209 serves/240 atts, 87 percent, 34 aces; 67 kills/259 atts, 26 percent; 56 assists; 145 digs/212 atts, 68 percent.

NCHS PLAYER STATS: Serving- Ashley Christianson 47/49, Lucy Ceaglske 22/23, Taylor Gaukel 28/30; Aces- Anna Richardson 13, Kianna Blackburn 10; Kills- Gaukel 32, Richardson 14; Assists- Christianson 50; Digs- Gaukel 57, Blackburn 27, Richardson 24.

The freshmen and sophs went to Newcastle on Sat. for pool play to start the day. Moorcroft got the best of NCHS 20-4 and 20-14, as did the Douglas A girls 20-9 and 20-12. They then split with Wright 20-16 and 7-20 before entering the Bronze bracket. The young Lady Tigers put up a good fight against Thunder Basin, falling in three close sets 12-13, 11-7 and 14-16.

DeAnna West served 9/10, while Adele DesEnfants had the highest kill percent with 2/7 and Danni Larson had 85 percent successful digs for the day.

NCHS travels to Crawford, NE Thurs. for games at 4 and 5 p.m. before opening the home schedule Friday night at 5 and 6 p.m. as Guernsey-Sunrise comes to Tiger Gym.
