New Lady Tigers make debut at Herder Classic

GLENROCK – The first snowstorm of the season made the Lady Tigers opening weekend a bit different than the original Herder Classic schedule had planned. Niobrara County High School stayed in Casper Thursday night and had to wait until mid-morning before heading to Glenrock to face Greybull.

Both squads had first game jitters and the Lady Buffs held a 15-10 halftime lead. Lusk made a brief run in the third period, but Greybull was able to hold on for the 31-24 win.

The Lady Tigers regrouped to face a new opponent as St. Stephens is now a 2A school. Lusk took a first period lead, but the Lady Eagles late run pushed them to a three-point halftime edge. Neither team could generate much offense in the third, as the game was tied at 20. St. Stephens outscored the Lady Tigers 14-8 in the final period to overtake NCHS for the 34-29 win.

On Saturday morning, NCHS faced the Wyoming Indian junior varsity team, and the Lady Tigers could only keep up with the Lady Chiefs for about 12 minutes. WIHS’s lead was just two after one period, but midway through the second, they hit their stride. By halftime, NCHS found themselves in a 10-point hole. Throughout the second half, Lusk struggled to find the basket, and WIHS pulled away in the 43-23 final.

The Lady Tigers hosted Guernsey-Sunrise Tuesday evening. NCHS will travel to Crawford, Nebraska on Friday night (3 p.m. junior varsity two quarters/varsity at 5 p.m.) before Sioux County, Nebraska visits Tiger Gym on Saturday (1 p.m. junior varsity two quarters/varsity at 3 p.m.).
