The Niobrara Senior Center held a Fun/Beer Fest on the last Thursday in August with activities beginning with an evening outdoor barbecue. About fifty people showed up to enjoy the food, fellowship and music of “Tall Paul.”

A light rain began during the food serving, which drove them under shelter with some enjoying the spacious garage, where the music was played.

Problems of all kinds seem to be plaguing our planet at this time, some manmade and some by the forces of nature beyond our control: Hurricane Ida on our southern coast, an earthquake devastating the small island nation of Haiti (again), drought and fires in many places of the United States and the urgent effort to safely evacuate U.S. citizens and military forces from Afghanistan, etc.

Patriotism seems to be lagging as we witness some refusing to honor the U.S. Flag or the National Anthem. Our country needs people to participate in organizations that can make a difference. Two such groups, the members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and their Auxiliaries and the American Legion and their Auxiliaries have outreach programs that may seem minor or small, but nationwide come together to make a big difference. Both organizations have historically used the distribution of Buddy Poppies in exchange for donations, which must be directed to programs that specifically benefit those serving in the military of the United States.

The local VFW Post No. 3511 and Auxiliary met Thursday, Aug. 26, at the Niobrara Senior Center. The American Legion Post No. 1 and Auxiliary will be meeting on the last Saturday of September at the Post Home in Van Tassell.
