Niobrara Conservation District afterschool program kicks off

Posted

The Niobrara Conservation District has kicked off its After School Program for students 2nd through 4th grade.  This is an opportunity for students to experience hands on learning and investigation of natural resource topics such as; Plants, Insects, Pollination and much more.  Students will meet for 6 sessions at the District classroom, with sessions going through May 24th.

Students started the sessions with learning about plant needs and the life cycle of the plant. They will be investigating root growth and planting garden starters.  There will be sessions on the connection of animal/insect needs to plant life, learning about pollinators with an opportunity to raise butterflies from caterpillars, in a habitat at the office, for release later in the spring.  Students will also investigate how plant seeds spread in nature and wildlife’s role in plant propagation and finish up with beneficial bugs, building a “bug hotel” for them.

The Conservation District is exploring the option of a one week summer program for kindergarten through 2nd grade.  If your child would be interested in this program please contact our office to discuss the options for scheduling.  Niobrara Conservation District, 334-9957.
