Niobrara County Canvass Board makes it official

Posted

On Aug. 24, the Niobrara County Canvass Board, consisting of Dennis Meier, Alice Kirn and Becky Freeman, gathered at the Niobrara County Courthouse to make Tuesday’s election count official. County Commissioners, Pat Wade and John Midkiff were also in attendance. Freeman, Niobrara County Clerk, began by giving an overview of the equipment used on election day. The AutoMark machine, as suggested by the name, is used by those who need help with marking their ballot. The M-100 is the machine that the completed ballots are fed into that reads and tabulates the votes.  Freeman also noted that there were 148 Absentee ballots sent out, in which, 143 were received back on or before Election Day. She stated that any ballot not received by 7pm on the day of elections, will not be counted. Freeman also informed the Board that, although there were several write-in votes, there were none that had an effect on any local races and, therefore, were not counted, with the exception of Precinct Committee People. Freeman also said that a frequent question was why the names don’t appear in the same order each time on the ballots. The names are rotated each time in order to ensure equal placement as some voters tend to choose the name at the top of the ballot.

After a brief explanation of the paperwork found in the official precinct binders, the Board reviewed all six binders and found that the counts were accurate. The results stand as tallied on the evening of Aug. 21st.

The Wyoming State Canvassing Board will convene on Wed., Aug. 29th. Members of the Board are: Governor Matt Mead; Secretary of State Edward Buchanan (chair); State Auditor Cynthia Cloud; and State Treasurer Mark Gordon.
