Niobrara Sportsman's Club Trap Shooting begins in May

Posted

Thunder storms and rain didn’t prevent the Niobrara Sportsman’s Club from holding their annual picnic and kick off night for trap shooting on Thursday, May 24. Back for the summer, trap shooting will take its regular time slot on Thursday nights for the better half of the summer. This year, seven teams have signed up to participate in the sport as they, plus others, enjoyed the kick off night with a red, white, and blue barbecue. Trap Shooting is the sport of hitting clay pigeons from the air and requires a steady hand and good aim. Teams are comprised of five people that will shoot fifty rounds each Thursday night, that’s broken into two rounds of trap. Teams are shooting at clay pigeons released from the trap houses in front of them and are eyeing to score points on their marksmanship by hitting the bird. The first round is shot at the twenty yard line while the second round depends solely on the team’s handicap—the better they shoot, the further back they go with the last mark at the 27 yard line. Scores are kept and teams are given a limited time to make up any night they missed for it to count in the final tally. With the first night under their belts, the teams will have the rest of the season to fight for status with a closing picnic and fun night being held the last night of the season.
