Recreation boys’ basketball delivers water instead of baskets

Members of the Recreation Boys’ Traveling Basketball Team took to the court Friday night, January 19, but instead of a basketball in hand they carried water bottles. Charlie Gaukel, JayVis Boldon, and Hudson Leimser ran water to the refs during timeouts and halftimes of the varsity Lady Tigers and Tigers basketball games against the rivaling Southeast Cyclones. The idea came from Niobrara County High School Athletic Director Matthew Vandebossche who contacted Shawn Leimser, Recreation Director, in search of youth to do the job. With the recreation boys’ season underway, it was a great chance for the younger Tigers to see their older counterparts in action and working hard both on the court and cheering on teammates from the bench. “I hope the younger kids learn that you need to be active and want to participate and winning doesn’t come easy, it takes a lot of practice and hard work” states Recreation Director Shawn Leimser, whom also doubles as a coach for the traveling team. Gaukel, Boldon, and the younger Leimser are all team-members of the younger traveling basketball team aged 3rd grade to 4th grade. Both their team and the older team, aged 5th grade-6th grade, were scheduled to take the court the following day, Saturday, January 20—this time with a basketball—in their second tournament. However, with the tournament meant to be held in Southeast and poor weather on the horizon, Leimser decided against the trip. Both teams will continue to practice with their next tournament being held in Lingle on Saturday, February 3.
