“You started as my boss, became my friend, and then quickly became family”. The heart-warming sentence was from Ellen Williams, who spoke to a large crowd gathered in The Pub for a benefit auction of Lusk’s own Kelly Sherman. Towards the end of January, Sherman suffered a life-threatening stroke and has since been battling—strongly—to return to her everyday life. Sherman, who was in attendance with her husband and daughter for a joyous, albeit emotional evening, hugged Williams’ after her opening speech before the auction began and Niobrara County citizens do what only comes as second nature; they helped.  “I do want to thank everybody. I appreciate all the people that were here and that donated. I appreciate this town and to be honest, I think if it wasn’t for the town and the tight knit community, I would have moved a long time ago; it’s this type of stuff that keeps me here” said Sherman.

Organized by Ellen Williams, Connie Halligan, Naomi Lackey, and others, the benefit was layered in a way that promised involvement for anyone—from bracelets that could be purchased outside of the benefit to making the event a fun night out. A taco bar was served for dinner at the start of the night followed by a live auction with donated items from those in the community—hot items included several donations from Wanda Brewster, a first print 2018 Legend of Rawhide poster, a meat select by Deckers, and a 12-14 pound smoked prime rib by Angry Irishman.  Following the auction, Maple Street Productions was on hand to provide music for a dance. Just before the lights were turned down and the music began, Justin Collins announced that from the auction alone, $3,540.00 was raised for Sherman and her husband Frank to help with their expenses.  

Williams, who was highly appreciative of those that had donated to the live auction and owners Connie and Jesse Halligan for allowing the benefit to be held at The Pub—Kelly’s favorite place, stated later in the evening, “I just want to thank everyone for coming and supporting Kelly; she’s my best friend and how the town came together is so great”.
