LUSK – Thirty years ago, the late Ernie Lemmons, long time Niobrara County resident and 4-H friend, had an idea for a simple fund raiser for the Shooting Sports program. His dream was to get together 4-H kids and people from the community to shoot on sponsored teams and compete for prizes. Each year you could see Ernie walking up and down Main Street with his yellow notepad in hand and a smile on his face getting team sponsors and collecting prizes. He loved this event and he loved the kids it supported. When his health began to decline he asked the Kevin Gaukel family to take over his labor of love. That was 12 years ago.
The club wants to challenge all shooting enthusiasts and 4-H supporters to come out and join the fun as they celebrate their 30th annual event. This year’s shoot will be held on Sunday, March 17, at the Shooting Sports Building. Participants can shoot any time between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., and awards will be presented at 4 p.m., in a variety of individual and team categories with door prizes given throughout the day as well.
Shooting Sports members will be seeking team sponsors over the next several weeks. For only $10.00 any individual or business may sponsor a 4 person team. The teams will be competing in air pistol and air rifle with all firearms and ammunition provided by the club. A special Shamrock Shoot will also be available for those looking for an extra challenge with a cash pot up for grabs. All NRA safety rules will be posted.
Put together a family team, a team from work, or a team from church...the possibilities are endless.
The club will be offering a concession stand throughout the day serving super nachos. The club invites everyone to come enjoy good fun, good food, and good fellowship.
This year’s event will be dedicated to the entire Lemmons family for their support of the program, our youth, and this community for so many years. Come help us celebrate this huge milestone in the program’s history.
Anyone interested in sponsoring a team, competing yourself, or donating team prizes or door prizes, please contact leaders Kevin and Julie Gaukel at 334-3252 or Amy Applegarth, director Kenny Jenson, or the Extension Office 334-3534.
