Sweet deals with Friends of Library

Posted

Friends of the Library (FOL) raised funds for the library programs they sponsor by selling cookies and candy at their annual Friends of the Library Christmas Candy and Cookie sale last Wednesday, December 6. This year, in addition to the sweet treats, the FOL brought back soups and breads, items that, according to Vicki Scott, once used to accompany the event but had gone by the wayside. “We had a really good turn out,” said Scott, “we just had so much more stuff this year”. FOL members make much of the candy, cookies, soups, and breads, but they are also thankful to anyone who decides they want to help and bring in treats of their own, “We appreciate the people in the community that donate. It takes so much. We put out a list and they sign up and bring us goodies to sell as well as what we make” states FOL member Joan Lenz. Last Wednesday proved winter, a factor that luckily did not stop candy sales. Sold in pounds, shoppers were able to grab a box and begin filling as soon as they walked into the room. Three tables stocked with sweet treats along with breads and soups filled the room, a weigh scale at the end that brought it all together. “We use it [funds] to fund RIF (Reading is Fun) that is no longer funded by the Federal government. We decided it’s too important, we need to encourage children to read so we needed to do it and fund it ourselves” explains Dawn Gaukel, adding that the money raised buys many of the books for the program. Money raised at the annual goodies sale funds the kids’ programs at the library including the magicians that are brought in and the summer reading program where kids can earn prizes for the books they read.
