The will of God

“We are living in troubled times!  It is impossible to predict from one day to the next what the morning headlines will announce.  In this day of international tension and political confusion, it is very easy to wonder if there are any certainties in life at all.  Is anyone in control?  Does anyone have the answers?”

This was the first paragraph in the book “How To Discover The Will Of God” by George Sweeting, written in 1975.  I often like to review the books I’ve read over the years, and this one seemed to jump out at me one morning.  As I read the first paragraph I laughed and read it to Toby.  It’s like nothing has changed, we are still in the same state as we were 45 years ago, still wondering if anything in life is certain anymore!

I have friends who are very concerned about the events taking place right now, but I keep remembering that there is one thing that has never changed and is a steadying force in my life.  God is still on the throne, God still has a plan, God has a plan for my life and yours and He is ready and willing to share it with us.  We usually want to see the plan and know exactly what is going to happen.  Unfortunately, God doesn’t work that way.  He likes to give us one step at a time for the path He has us on, and we are in charge of finding the light for that path through our study of the Bible in our Daily Quiet Time or through the knowledge He has given us so far.

As an artist and designer I like to see how things can fit together to form the finished picture.  But only God sees the complete picture, we are each just a contributor to the end result; each one of us has a unique gift, a different purpose, a job to fulfil to make the picture complete.  We are not all to be the same and to do the same thing.  Just as each painting has hundreds of brushstrokes and various colors to make a beautiful picture, God uses many of us in varying ways to complete His purpose for His people.  No two people are the same, and that is exactly the way God planned it.  It takes all of us to fulfill His plan.

How do we know what we are to do?  Ask God.  Ephesians 2:10 “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (TLB).  Be praying, asking God to make you more aware of the people in your life.  Pray for them and ask God to help you minister to their needs.

I have noticed over the years that people automatically do what they enjoy doing for others, they have something that they do that encourages people or brightens their lives and it serves God’s purpose.  It’s not a formula that everyone should follow, it is what is important to each person and comes naturally.

We are living in troubled times right now, and many would like to know how it will turn out, but we have to take one day at a time and trust God.  We need to follow the path He shines His light on each day and trust Him with the results.  He has prepared us for good works, “for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to His good purpose.” Phil:2:13 NLB.  What a privilege to be used to fulfil His good purpose!  Be confident that you have everything you need to do what He calls you to do and get out there and do it!  And remember, it is His good purpose too, so just trust Him with the results—takes the pressure off.
