Three meets makes for a busy week for Tiger track

Three track meets in a week equates to a lot of personal bests and a lot of hardware for the Tiger track athletes.

On Tuesday, the throwers headed to Douglas to compete in the weather shortened Jackalope Cage Wars.  In the tough conditions, there were still some news-worthy performances.

Reygan Molzahn threw 93’ in the discus to win silver while teammate Mackenzie Lyons followed in bronze position throwing 86’ 1”.  The girls came up just short of winning the team relay competition that totaled the distances of the top 4 throwers from each team.

For the boys, Jake Heil led the throwers in the shot put competition throwing just shy of 40’ to place 4th overall.

On Thursday in Pine Bluffs, the teams competed extremely well in the blustery conditions where the boys’ team finished 2nd behind Pine Bluffs scoring 102 points while the girls’ team placed 3rd overall scoring 90.

The boys’ team had two individual champions on the day.  Traylin Bruegger won the 300 hurdles in a prequalifying time of 41.54 while teammate Alec Penfield went 6’ to win the high jump.

The girls had five champions including Miranda Gilkey in the triple jump, high jump, and long jump.  The long jump of 15’ 11.5” was a prequalifying mark for Gilkey.  Taylor Gaukel won the 100 meter hurdles in a time of 17.77.  The 4 X 100 relay team of Gilkey, Gaukel, Courtney Rowley, and Anna Richardson also won gold in a time of 54.03.

Both teams had silver medalists including Drake Lamp in the 100 in a time of 12.77, Bruegger in the 110 hurdles in 17.87, and Gaukel in the 300 hurdles in 50.84.

Bronze medal winners included Teagan Tschacher in the 800 in a personal best 2:11 and in high jump going 5’ 6”; Jake Heil in the shot put going 44’ 4”; Courtney Rowley in the 300 hurdles; Aric Eaton in the pole vault going 10’ 1”; and Reygan Molzahn in the discus going a personal best 97’ 5”.

Other top 8 placers for the boys were 7th for Bruegger in the 200, 8th for William Fish in the 1600; Wyatt Stauffer placing 5th in the 110 hurdles, 4th in the 200 hurdles, 7th in the triple jump, and 6th in the high jump.  Eaton placed 8th in the 300 hurdles and Heil earned 5th in the discus.  The long jumpers had a great day where Lamp placed 4th, Penfield 5th, and Kade Clark 8th.  Zach Vandeberg also placed 5th in pole vault.

The boys’ 4 X 100 relay placed 4th and the 4 X 400 relay placed 7th.

Other top placers for the girls included Mackenzie Lyons placing 5th in the shot put and 6th in the discus.  Rowley placed 4th in the pole vault and 5th in the 100 hurdles.  Jalyn McDaniel rounded out the scoring for the Lady Tigers placing 5th in the pole vault.

On Saturday, the roll of great performances continued into the North Country.  Both the girls and the boys were team champions in Upton where the girls scored 140 points and the boys scored 155 to win the team titles.  Both teams scored in every event that a Tiger was entered into.

Taylor Gaukel and Traylin Bruegger had the Midas touch as they both earned 4 gold medals apiece.  Individually, Gaukel won the long jump, triple jump, and 100 hurdles while on the 4 X 100 relay team with Gilkey, Rowley, and Richardson.

Bruegger won the 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles, the 4 X 100 relay with Clark, Lamp, and Molzahn, and the sprint medley relay with Lamp, Clark, and Tschacher.

Miranda Gilkey won the high jump going 5’ 2” and was second in both the 300 hurdles and the long jump.

Jake Heil had an excellent day where he won the shot put going 45’ 8” and was third in the discus.  Alec Penfield was the other boys’ champion going 6’ in the high jump.

Teagan Tschacher won silver in both the high jump and 800.

Courtney Rowley had a nice day as she placed 2nd in pole vault and 4th in both the 400 and 100 hurdles.  Fellow vaulter Jalyn McDaniel won a pair of bronzes also in the pole vault and the 800.

The girl throwers also performed well as Mackenzie Lyons placed 3rd in the shot put and 4th in the shot.  Reygan Molzahn placed 6th in both throws, while Richardson placed 5th in the shot put.

Sierra Lemons, Esmeralda Caldera, and Renae Marker also scored points for the Lady Tigers.

The freshmen boys contributed in several events.  Drake Lamp placed 4th in the 100 and 5th in the long jump.  Aric Eaton placed 3rd in pole vault, 5th in 300 hurdles, and 8th in long jump.  Jasper Caldera threw over 41’ to place 3rd in shot put.

The boy distance runners had great days also.  Will Fish placed 5th in the 1600 and 4th in the 3200 while teammate Tyler Basile placed 6th in the 800 and 8th in the 1600.

Sprinter Kade Clark placed 6th in both the 100 and 200, while Zach Vandeberg placed 8th in the 100.

Sophomore Wyatt Stauffer continues to impress placing 3rd in high jump, 4th in 300 hurdles, and 4th in triple jump.  Fellow sophomore Damien Molzahn placed 7th in shot put.

Several Tigers have qualified for the Best in the West meet in Scottsbluff and the Track Classic in Casper this week.  NCHS will also be hosting the Dennis Zowada Invitational on Saturday.
