Tiger track competes at Chadron State Indoor

Posted

Eighteen of the Niobrara County’s 35 track athletes headed to Chadron State on Saturday morning to compete in the annual Chadron State Indoor track meet.  This is always a great warmup for the outdoor season.  The Tigers are consistently shorthanded at this meet as several of the athletes are competing at State FBLA.

The Lady Tigers had some great early season marks in the field events starting with Chadron State track recruit Miranda Gilkey, who won the high jump going 5’ 2” and placing second in the long jump going 16’ 3”.

Junior Taylor Gaukel also had a nice day going 14’ 11” in the long jump to place 5th amongst the competitors.  She also barely missed running in the finals of the 55 meter hurdle race placing 9th.  Teammate Reygan Molzahn suffered the same fate in the shot put placing 9th after throwing 28’ 6.5”.

On the boys’ side, Alec Penfield placed 4th in the high jump going 5’ 10” while junior Teagan Tschacher ran a great 800 meter race in 2:21 to place in the bronze medal position.  Wyatt Stauffer also barely missed the finals of the 55 hurdles in 9th place.

“Overall, I was pleased with the meet results,” stated Coach Sandra Johnson.  “Our younger athletes got a meet under their belts, while our older kids are now in track mode  It is going to be a great track season.”

Both Tiger squads are looking to build on their success from last season as it gets into full swing next week at the Morrill Early Bird meet on Saturday.
