Tigers drop conference opener vs Burns

Posted

With SEWAC and 2A Southeast Region games starting, NCHS had mixed results with a Friday trip to Lingle before Burns visited Tiger Gym on Saturday.

Ryan Gilkey buried a couple of three pointers and four free throws to help propel the Tigers to a 16-14 first quarter lead. Lusk’s energy and ball control was much better than recent outings and it showed in the close score. LFL caught up but a deep Eli Wagner triple tied it at 23 before the Doggers pushed ahead 29-25 at the break.

Another trey from Gilkey and one from Monte Wade as time wound down kept NCHS close at 40-37 after three quarters. The Tigers played their best (and closest) game of the season but just could not get enough shots to fall as the home team held on to win 49-45.

While Friday showed that the Tigers can play team ball together and compete, Saturday’s first quarter was an epic reversal of fortune. Burns had four different players knock down treys and rarely missed while Lusk’s shots were not close. The Broncs pulled off a 25-0 quarter, clearly reeling the Tigers and their faithful. Wagner got Lusk on the board with a three pointer and from there Lusk and Burns played a much more balanced game. The Broncs torrid shooting cooled and at halftime the lead was 34-11.

An early run to start the third period was enough to ensure the win for the visitors as the final ended up 56-21.
