Tigers qualify 14 athletes for state championships

The Tiger track team will travel to Casper this weekend for the Wyoming Track and Field Championships.  The track teams competed in the 2A East Regional in Torrington on Friday and Saturday where 14 competitors qualified for State.

Both teams finished in 6th place in the team races.  The girls scored 66 points while the boys scored 57.

Six girls either qualified or were prequalified for the State Meet.  Miranda Gilkey led the way for the girls where she was the Regional Champion in the high jump going 5’ and the triple jump going 34’ 7.25”.  Gilkey also earned silver in the 300 hurdles in a time of 48.92.

Gilkey was also awarded the SEWAC Track Athlete of the Year by the coaches.  She earned this honor as a sophomore also.

Taylor Gaukel also had a fantastic weekend winning long jump going just shy of 16’.  Gaukel also earned Regional runner-up in both the 100 hurdles and the triple jump.

Freshman Courtney Rowley qualified in three individual events.  She ran a personal best in both hurdle races.  Her 50.53 in the 300 hurdles was good for 4th place and her time of 18.02 in the 100 hurdles placed her 6th.  Rowley also vaulted 7’ 10” to place 8th in pole vault.

The 4 X 100 relay team of Gilkey, Gaukel, Rowley, and Anna Richardson earned 8th place after a mishap on a handoff.  The relay will compete at state after prequalifying early and often in the season.

The sprint medley team Jalyn McDaniel, Esmeralda Caldera, Sierra Lemons, and Renae Marker set a school record in that event of 5:16.86 to place 7th.

Junior Mackenzie Lyons will compete at state in the shot put as will senior Jalyn McDaniel in the pole vault.  Both athletes finished just outside of the podium, but were prequalified.

For the boys, Traylin Bruegger can check the school record in the 300 hurdles off his to-do-list.  Bruegger’s Regional Champion time of 40.67 knocks an 18 year old record held by former track standout Bret Zowada off the record board.  Bruegger also ran a personal best 16.42 in the 110 hurdles to earn bronze.

Senior Jake Heil also had an excellent weekend where he brought home a pair of silvers in the throwing events.  Heil threw 45’ 9” in the shot put and 137’ 10” in the discus.  Freshman thrower Jasper Caldera also had a two foot personal best throw in the shot put of 44’ 6” to place 6th and qualify for state.

Alec Penfield continued his gold streak where he won the high jump going 6’ 2”.

Sophomore Wyatt “Stave” Stauffer will make his first trip to the state track meet by clearing 5’ 8” in the high jump to place 6th.

The boys’ sprint medley relay team of Bruegger, Drake Lamp, Kade Clark, and Teagan Tschacher placed 3rd in a time of 3:56 to round the competitors for next week.

The boys’ 4 X 100 relay of Bruegger, Lamp, Clark, and Damien Molzahn placed 6th after a baton bobble.

The State Track Meet kicks of Thursday at 11:00.
