Tigers snap losing streak in big way with determination

Posted

This season has been one of many struggles for the NCHS boys basketball coaches and players, but as noted by many officials and opposing coaches- they don’t give up for 32 minutes. Despite a loss at Glenrock, a younger Viking team than Lusk was the right medicine to stop the 13 game losing streak.

Friday at Glenrock, the offense struggled to get anything going and found themselves in a 10-3 first period hole. While Lusk had their chances to get back in it, but a dreadful half from the free throw line doomed NCHS. The Tigers were just four of 16, and made just one field goal. The home team stepped on the pedal and raced out to a 27-8 halftime lead.

The Herders put the game out of reach in the third with a 19-8 run before the JV guys finished out the 53-23 final.

It didn’t take long for the Tigers to establish control of the Saturday game against Guernsey-Sunrise as Blackburn and Gilkey each buried three pointers in the early minutes. The 12-2 lead prompted a timeout from the visitors, but NCHS kept on with a 21-6 first quarter lead. Gilkey drilled another trey to open an 18 point lead for the Tigers but then the defenses picked it up. The score was 29-12 at halftime as the Tigers entered the locker room full of smiles.

Whatever Coach Nelson said (or didn’t) worked as Gilkey and Stone combined for ten points and five other players scored in the quarter. The lead was 47-17 after three periods and the Tigers were on their way to the victory. The JV squad finished out the final stanza and Cole Hart’s trey made the 62-22 final score worth it.
