GLENROCK – After dropping a close game to the Glenrock Herders in Lusk a few weeks ago, the Niobrara County High School boys’ basketball team avenged it Friday night.

Tanner Carpenter and Wyatt Stauffer combined for 11 of the Tigers 13 first-period points, holding a six-point lead. The home team lit the nets for four treys and rallied to a 27-24 lead entering halftime.

NCHS stayed within striking distance of the Herders with James Stone putting in six points with the last coming to give Lusk the 39-37 lead with one quarter to play.

As Glenrock tried to keep it close, Ryan Bruegger calmly made 8 of 9 from the charity stripe (11 of 14 for the game), Walker Kupke went 4 of 6 in the fourth) and Ben Eiden knocked in 2 of 4 in the fourth.

Glenrock buried nine three pointers in the game but NCHS withstood their charge and held on for the 59-49 quadrant win.

YODER ñ Without the services of Stauffer and Eiden, NCHS caught a Southeast Cyclone team coming off a blowout loss at Pine Bluffs the night before.

It didn’t take long to determine which way this contest would go as the home team scored the first 10 points very quickly. Southeast looked every bit like a team that could make a deep playoff run in the 20-6 first quarter.

A 3-pointer from Bruegger pulled the Tigers within 24-13, but it would not get better from there. Southeast’s Anderson twins combined for 17 points in the period as they closed on a 15-2 run over the Tigers.

The 25-point deficit Lusk faced was unsurmountable, but the second half played the Cyclones much closer in the 55-31 defeat. The loss drops NCHS to 8-12 overall and 1-4 in quadrant play.

The junior varisty team lost at Glenrock 22-19 in two quarters as Aric Eaton put in seven points and Dylan Molzahn added five. At Southeast, they beat the Cyclones 30-25 in two quarters as Molzahn and Dayne Lamp combined for 21 points and seven rebounds.

Seniors Carpenter, Eiden, Damien Molzahn, Stauffer and Stone will be honored with their parents Friday before their final game at Tiger Gym. Pine Bluffs comes to Lusk with the JV playing at 4 p.m. at LEMS before the varsity starts around 7 p.m..
