Tigers sweep Newcastle and Torrington meets

NEWCASTLE – Niobrara County High School scored 171 team points to win the Newcastle Invitational on Friday and came home with two individual champions.

Colton Coffman (126 pounds) and Nathan Fish (113) each went 4-0, combining for 57 team points. Dylan Molzahn added 24 team points on his way to second place at 220 pounds, while Sean Johnson (145) added 17 to claim third place. Blake Miller (170) and Miles Ashurst (182) also brought home bronze, and Cody Taylor (152) picked up a fourth-place finish.

Gabe Matthews (120) and Alijah Pavone (160) came away with fifth-place finishes, to combine for 21 team points. Damieon Pavone (113), David West (132), Chris Hicks (132), Ivan Kremers (145), Donovan Kruse (152) and Chris Knop (195) also wrestled and their 25 team points was enough to push the Tigers past the Natrona County JV by three points in the final team standings.

TORRINGTON – If the championship on Friday wasn’t enough, NCHS went to the Blazer Duals on Saturday and used a 5-0 record to bring home first place.

The Tigers opened with a 46-30 win over Burns/Pine Bluffs as Damieon Pavone, Coffman, West, Johnson, Miller, Ashurst and Molzahn all won their matches. Hicks, Kruse, A. Pavone and Knop were defeated.

Next up was the Kelly Walsh junior varsity, and Lusk had little trouble in the 54-18 dual win. NCHS won eight matches by pin, led by Alijah Pavone, Coffman, Fish, West, Matthews, Johnson, Molzahn and Miller. Ashurst and Damieon Pavone also took wins. Hicks, Kruse and Knop struggled in defeat.

For the third dual, Lusk faced the unattached All-Stars and won soundly 60-18. Fish, Matthews, Coffman, West and Johnson pushed NCHS to five wins in the first six matches. Alijah Pavone, Miller, Ashurst, Molzahn and Damieon Pavone wrapped up the win.

Next up was the host Trailblazers, as Matthews, Coffman, West and Johnson once again got Lusk off to a good start. Kruse, Alijah Pavone, Miller and Damieon Pavone went down by pin, but Ashurst, Knop, Molzahn and Fish provided wins for the 48-30 final.

To wrap up the championship, NCHS took down Glenrock by a 57-18 count. Coffman, Hicks, West, Johnson and Kruse pushed the Tigers ahead early before Knop, Molzahn and Damieon Pavone received forfeit wins. Fish and Matthews sealed the title with quick pins for Lusk. David West was named outstanding wrestler as the sophomore won all five matches.

This weekend the Tigers are headed to the Dylan Humes Memorial Tournament in Moorcroft. Wrestling will begin Friday at noon and Saturday at 9 a.m.
