Torrington and Pine Bluffs slip past NCHS


LUSK – It’s uncertain the last time Niobrara County High School faced the 3A Torrington varsity, but with the revamped schedule, the teams met at Tiger Gym on Tuesday, Sept 29.

The Lady Tigers opened up with a 6-4 lead before the visitors found their rhythm.

A 6-0 run preceded a timeout before another spurt by the Lady Blazers. The 18-10 lead became 25-15 in the first set win.

In the second set the visitors again led 10-6 and 18-10 as the miscues added up for NCHS. Torrington went on to win 25-13 and take a 2-0 lead.

The Lady Tigers were much more active in the third set as they turned the tables on the Lady Blazers with a 10-5 lead. The score grew to 15-9 before Torrington adjusted with a seven-point run.

A tie score at 16 was all Lusk could muster as THS closed with a 9-2 run and the three-set sweep in the 25-18 win.

NCHS TEAM STATS: Serving 38/48, 78 percent. 14 kills/64 attempts. 12 assists. 57 digs/89 attempts, 64 percent

On Saturday, at the Hornet’s Nest in Pine Bluffs, the Lady Tigers traded shots back and forth with the hosts but came up short in the first set 25-22.

The second set was just as competitive, yet Pine Bluffs nabbed the 25-18 win.

The Lady Hornets- with their twelve state champion banners draping the walls- won the third set by a 25-12 final.

NCHS TEAM STATS: Serving 49/55, 89 percent, 5 aces. 13 kills/62 attempts. 11 assists. 55 digs/99 attempts, 56 percent.

NCHS PLAYER STATS: Serving – Marker 9/9; Danni Larson 6/6; Krueger 6/6; A. DesEnfants 8/9. Kills – Marker 5. Assists – Bruch 8. Digs – Richardson 18; Krueger 16.

The junior varisty lost to Torrington in two sets 25-18 and 25-9 as Hattie Nelson led the serving with seven of eight and Melody Zumbrunnen went nine of 11.

In Pine Bluffs they lost 25-23 and 25-17 with Evelyn DesEnfants leading on seven of nine serving.

This week the Lady Tigers try to right the ship as Moorcroft visits Friday with the first of three games starting at 4 p.m. They make a trip to Glenrock on Saturday for three games starting at 1 p.m.
