CHEYENNE – The Niobrara County High School girls’ basketball team improved to 7-3 at the Taco Johns Invitational last weekend.
An early-season non-conference game at Pine Bluffs Thursday night was the only blemish, before they rebounded to defeat the Cheyenne South JV and Wheatland teams.
The Wyopreps.com No. 2-ranked Lady Hornets took an early 8-2 first period lead, with their well-documented size advantage over everyone. Courtney Rowley hit a pair of 3-pointers to keep the Lady Tigers close, in a 19-14 halftime lead for the hosts.
Pine Bluffs opened the game up after the break with a 19-7 run through the third quarter. Seven different players scored for the Lady Hornets, as the Lady Tigers could not find many open shots. As the coaches emptied their benches, the Pine Bluffs went on to the 48-29 win.
Friday afternoon at South High School, the Lady Tigers faced the Lady Bison JV. Potter and Rowley provided all the offense with a 9-5 first quarter lead. Despite a couple of South treys, NCHS held on to a five-point lead at the half.
The defense turned up the pressure and ignited the offense as Shaw and Rowley each hit long range bombs. Lusk pulled away in the third with a 35-18 cushion, before winning 46-26.
Saturday’s finale again at South, was against 3A Wheatland, who was without the services of star Danielle Brow. The teams played to an 8-8 first quarter draw in the defensive struggle, but the Lady Bulldogs took the five-point lead into the locker rooms.
Wheatland hit three 3-pointers and suddenly NCHS was down 34-24 entering the final stanza. Rowley (with 12 of her 22 points coming in the fourth), and Shaw each sank triples to ignite the rally. Potter sank three of four from the stripe as the Lady Tigers went on a 20-6 run to win the game 44-40.
The JV lost to Pine Bluffs 49-21 but rebounded to beat the South sophomores, 26-21. On Saturday they let one slip away against Wheatland in the 29-26 defeat.
Friday evening Lingle-Fort Laramie visits Tiger Gym for games at 4 and 5:30 p.m.
