Weekend events kick off Fair

Posted

Weekend events including the stray gathering, ranch rodeo, and gymkhana kicked off the 2018-A Grand Fiesta-themed Niobrara County Fair. Friday night started with the stray gathering, followed by the ranch rodeo Saturday afternoon, and finally the Gymkhana that saw young rodeo-ers playing in the mud as they made their way through the days’ events.

Late last week was met with a fair amount of rain and the weekend was no exception, including Saturday’s Eastern Wyoming Ranch Rodeo events. Towards the end of the Calcutta, spectators and rodeo-ers alike were treated to a quick shower, muddying up the arena. But, in true Cowboy form, the word around the bleachers was, “It’s a beautiful day,” and “What great weather for a rodeo”. Coats were donned, saddles were strapped, boots were pulled up, the flag was presented, and the rodeo went on.

At Calcutta, in no specific order, Platte River Boys were purchased by Susan Gray for $200.00, Bootheel 7 by JD Wasserburger for $500.00, Thompson Livestock by Ty Thompson for $600.00, Hanson Livestock by Alvie Manning for $450.00, Hageman for Governor by Britton Moen for $450.00, ABS by the Silver Dollar Bar for $100.00, 4-3 Ranch by Cardwell Ranch for $300.00, Sturman Ranch by Cody Thompson for $325.00, and Renegade Ranch by JD Wasserburger for $600.00. WYO Wild Cards were a scratch.

The rodeo included two events: the scramble and the trailer loading. Teams were drawn blind for order in the scramble. Following the scramble, the top four teams made the short go for the trailer loading. The short go teams included: Bootheel 7, Sturman Ranch, Thompson Livestock, Hageman for Governor, and Bootheel 7. When all was said and done, Thompson Livestock came in fourth place, followed by Sturman Ranch in third, Hageman for Governor in second, and first place went to Bootheel 7 with a winning time of 1:11:91. Due to a recent partnership between the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at Wyoming University and NILE, Bootheel 7, by winning Saturday’s rodeo, secured their qualifying spot at the Farstad Oil Ranch Rodeo finals at NILE.

There are plenty more events coming up for the fair, a complete list can be found online or at the extension office.
