SHOSHONI – The Niobrara County High School wrestlers had their final tune up before regionals with a quad in Fremont County at Shoshoni High School last Saturday.
First on the mat was Dubois, and Gabe Matthews pinned his opponent before a forfeit at 120 pounds. Colton Coffman also gained a pin, but Stanton Ricketts was defeated. Sean Johnson retook the lead for the Tigers with a second period pin, but three straight forfeits gave the Rams a 30-18 lead. Miles Ashurst had a forfeit and Jasper Caldera won by pin fall. A forfeit at 220 pounds gave Dubois the 36-30 dual win.
Rocky Mountain was up next for the Tigers. Matthews, Ricketts and Caldera won by forfeit, while Coffman and Johnson were defeated but Ashurst’s pin gave NCHS the 24-21 dual victory.
Greybull/Riverside wrapped up the day for Lusk as Matthews, Coffman and Johnson earned forfeits. The Buffaloes took six weights by forfeit and Ricketts was beaten. Ashurst had a first period pin and Caldera won a 10-5 decision but the Tigers fell by a 42-27 score.
The 2A Southeast Regionals are on tap for this Saturday at Glenrock, and while all Tiger wrestlers will participate, only the top four in each weight class qualify for state. Action starts at 10 a.m., and WHSAA admission prices will be in effect. The 2A State Tournament is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 25 in Casper.
