A total of 49 students were recognized for their educational accomplishments when the Wyoming Women’s Center (WWC) conducted its annual spring graduation ceremony on May 18, 2017. The event, set to a theme of “Fire and Ice: a Fire for Knowledge, the Icy Calm of
Success,” was well attended. Facility Warden, Rick Catron, welcomed family members of the graduates. In addition to the family members, the ceremony was also attended by Wyoming Department of Corrections Deputy Director, Steve Lindly and Education Programs Manager, Betty Abbott, as well as the staff of the Women’s Center.
Thirty-five individuals were recognized for their accomplishments in earning a high school equivalency credential. Another 10 were recognized for earning their welding certificates from Eastern Wyoming College, while four others were honored for earning their computer certification certificates from Eastern Wyoming College.
Guest speaker, Dr. Susan Dewey, Associate Professor of Gender and Women Studies in the College of Arts and Science at the University of Wyoming, addressed the graduates. In addition to congratulating the women on their achievements, Dr. Dewey asked the graduates to not take their educational achievement lightly as there are, in the civilized world, still an estimated 20% of woman who are considered illiterate in this day and age.
Taunie Williams, nominated as the class representative by her Adult Education Class peers, addressed the group and recognized the importance of their accomplishment. She went on to say how proud she was of all who had reached this milestone of graduation and had not allowed their circumstances to hold them back. Further, on a more personal note, she thanked the WWC Education department and her family for the support they gave her in her quest toward this accomplishment.
This year’s graduation team and organizers of the successful event included Computer Instructor, Alexis Smith (chair); ABE Teachers, Gloria Wolf and John Baldwin; and Recreational Specialist, Thomas Aitchison.
