LUSK – Niobrara County High School (NCHS) seniors were celebrated during the NCHS graduation on May 19. The graduates were given praises and honors for their hard work and celebrating together as they look towards the future. Salutatorians were Haven Hendricks and Gracie ZumBrunnen. The honor of valedictorian was Tessa Manning.

NIOBRARA COUNTY – On May 16, Wyoming Virtual Academy (WYVA) seniors traveled to Lusk from all over the state to celebrate their final day with words from keynote speaker Governor Mark Gordon.

NIOBRARA COUNTY - The Niobrara Homemakers celebrated their annual Spring Tea luncheon with the announcement of three scholarship recipients and guest speakers from Converse Hope Center on May 8.

The visitor on the agenda was Richelle Balcazar, the director of the Converse Hope Center. This center specializes in advocacy for victims of crimes in Douglas. Converse Hope Center has a satellite office in Glenrock. Soon, Converse Hope Center will be absorbing Niobrara County’s Helpmate. Helpmate shut down less than a year ago.

NIOBRARA COUNTY - Nearly every field of interest will undergo new developments and ranching is certainly no exception. Bringing such developments to the attention local ranchers was the purpose of the Spring Resource Rendezvous, which was held at the Niobrara County Fairgrounds on April 23. According to Conversation District Manager Lisa Shaw, the event was intended to “get new and exciting technology and information to the ranching community and the natural resource people.” This mission was realized through an eclectic trio of speakers.

NIOBRARA COUNTY - On April 26, Operation Remount honored Marine sniper Sergeant Billy James “BJ” Shepperson who passed away on December 27, 2018. In tribute to the departed serviceman, Karen and Kelly Alexander and many dedicated volunteers built “BJs Cabin” for veterans to stay while undergoing therapy involving wild mustangs.

LUSK - The NCHS FBLA once again hosted a successful fundraiser with their third annual Career, Technical and Fine Arts Night dinner and showcase. Held on April 23, the night is not only a way for the local chapter to raise money for their trip to the national competition in June, but also the opportunity for the students involved in fine and technical (CTE) arts to showcase all their hard work.

LUSK – Niobrara County High School students got to explore a career in electrical work on Wednesday, April 23, when Encore Electrical, a Colorado-based legacy company, arrived in Lusk.

LUSK - The Rawhide FFA Chapter began their successful 2024-2025 school year welcoming new members and bright ideas. Homecoming was an exciting period as the chapter hosted its first annual Talladega Nights, where members and teachers put together carts and rapidly raced around the block. Trophies were set in place as different age divisions competed for first place.

LUSK – After 30 years of sorting mail, working at other Post Offices and generally helping out where she could, Cindy Starkey is looking forward to finally retiring.

On April 21, the Niobrara County School Board heard a presentation delivered by the FBLA (Future Business Leader of America) team slated to attend Nationals in Anaheim, California. Coach Laura Lyons said this was great team. 13 of the team members qualified for nationals. The students told the board what they competed in during state competitions. Lyons asked the board for their continued support during the national competition. This year’s expenses will exceed last year’s, according to Lyons.

NIOBRARA COUNTY – During the Niobrara County School District #1 school board meeting, visitor Shannon Hart read a statement on behalf of concerned parents of Lance Creek school students on April 21.

NIOBRARA COUNTY - Rebecca Brextel, a Freedom Caucus supporter and Teton County activist, visited with members of the Niobrara County GOP on Tuesday, April 15, to talk about her current bid for the Wyoming GOP chair.

CASPER, WYOMING  – The Wyoming SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Conference (SLSC), held April 14-16, 2025, at Casper College, showcased the talents of over 750 career and technical education (CTE) students from across Wyoming. Among the standout competitors were students from Niobrara County High School, who demonstrated exceptional skill, knowledge, and leadership in the Wyoming SkillsUSA Championships, a rigorous competition highlighting the state’s future workforce.

NIOBRARA COUNTY – Niobrara County Sheriff Randy Starkey spoke with the county commissioners concerning the provision of Wyoming State Retirement to Sheriff Office employees during the Niobrara County Commissioners meeting on April 15.

LUSK – Many members of the community will be celebrating Easter at their respective churches this weekend. There will be sunrise services, potluck meals and sermons about how Christ has risen.

LUSK – We all dream of retiring some day when we have finally hit the age old enough to secure social security, however for one local woman, her retirement came when she turned 80 years old last year.
