Boys track fourth at state Niobrara County tracksters earn six all-state nods

CASPER – The Niobrara County High School Tigers competed in the 1A state track meet this weekend in Casper and came home with lots of hardware.

For the second consecutive year, the boys’ team captured a fourth-place finish, scor- ing 64 points. The girls tallied 34 points to finish ninth as a team.

The boys’ and girls’ teams together had five individuals earning six all-state awards.

Gracie ZumBrunnen had a fantastic weekend, becom- ing a two-time state cham- pion in jumping events. She long jumped a career best of 17 feet, 4 3⁄4 inches to snag gold. ZumBrunnen then triple jumped her way to another gold medal with a mark of 35-08 1⁄4 to earn her third high school career all-state award in track.

Nathan Miller had his best state meet of his career. He earned a silver medal in the long jump, going just over 21 feet to earn all-state. Miller was also a bronze-medal win- ner in the high jump, clear- ing 6-00 before running a per- sonal best in the 200-meters of 23.63 seconds to place third.

Miller finished off the state meet with a sixth-place fin- ish in the triple jump, going 40-07.

Isaac Assman had an ex- cellent Saturday at state. He started the morning off with an all-state run in the 110- meter hurdles in a time of 16.20 seconds to place second.

An hour later, Assman placed third in the 300-meter hurdles with a personal best

of 43.14 seconds. He also com- peted in the high jump and cleared 5-04.

Sophomore Raynce Brott can now call himself a state champion. He threw a career best in the discus on Thurs- day of 154-10 to win the 1A state discus title and take home the gold medal. His throw was second only to the 4A state champion.

Brott wrapped up his sea- son with a bronze medal in the shot put, throwing 44-04 1⁄2.

Marleigh Smith earned her second consecutive all-state award in the high jump, plac- ing in the silver position by clearing a personal best of 5-03.

Smith also competed in the triple jump, going just over 31 feet.

Thrower Kyra Willey fin- ished her track career by bringing home two medals from the state meet. Willey finished sixth in the shot put with a throw of almost 31 feet and went on to place seventh in the discus where she went almost 94 feet.

Jackson Smith had a busy track meet. He competed in four events and had a career day in the 300-meter hurdles, bringing home fourth place with a personal best time of 43.33 seconds. He also ran 17.81 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles and barely missed the finals. Smith long jumped over 18 feet and triple jumped just over 37 feet. 

Brady Swisher pole vaulted a personal best of 10-06 and earned an eighth-place spot on the podium.

Jumper Jaci Vetter also found an eighth-place spot in the long jump, going 15-07 1⁄2. She triple jumped over 31 feet and competed in the high jump as well.

The boys’ 4x400-meter relay team of Swisher, Assman, Kayden Goodwin and Joaquin Cassiano ran a season best time of 4 minutes, 47 sec- onds to place fourth in a race that helped the Tigers secure

fourth place as a team.
Both the boys’ and girls’ 4x100-

meter relay teams barely missed the podium with each finishing ninth. The boys’ team of Swisher, Good- win, Cassiano and Connor Luker ran 48.60 seconds while the girls’ team of Smith, Vetter, Abby Glavan and Bristol Cardwell ran 56.60 seconds.

Cassiano also ran the 100-meters at 12.46 seconds and the 200-meters at 24.90 seconds.

Glavan ran the 100-meters in 14.61 seconds.

Emily ZumBrunnen was scheduled to compete in four events but was

unable to compete in all four after a mishap in triple jump. She ran a good 200-meters in 28.27 seconds and long jumped over 14 feet.

Junior Charlie Gaukel jumped well in the high jump, clearing 5-04. Goodwin also competed in the pole vault.

The Tigers wrap up a successful season with their annual banquet on Tuesday.
