LUSK - Veteran’s Day was a day set aside to honor both living and fallen veterans. The bloody combat of World War I had ceased on November 11, 1918. The cessation of the fighting came on the eleventh month and the eleventh day and the eleventh hour. Therefore, whatever day of the week November 11 happens to fall on is designated a “veteran’s day.” The defenders of the nation are celebrated and honored on this day.

It was no different for the Lusk Elementary/Middle School (LEMS), where local veterans who have served the United States with honor, sacrifice and bravery were honored. Veteran’s names adorned signs on the front lawn at LEMS.
Before the program, the Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all. The LEMS band played the “Star-Spangled Banner.” The choir sang several patriotic songs and, at the end of the program, each veteran was named. The presenters of the program thanked the veterans for their service.
Post Commander of Niobrara VFW (Veteran’s Foreign War) #3511 Ed Tirado and his helper, Donna Lloyd, presented certificates to the kindergarten class commending them for their understanding of the Pledge of Allegiance. The VFW and the American Legion Post #1 gave the students a small outline of why the Pledge of Allegiance is recited.
The VFW will be selling calendars beginning this month. Proceeds are split between the VFW of Wyoming and the American Legion. To purchase calendars, call Ed Tirado at 307-340-1420 . Calendars will be available at the Best Western Pioneer Court Hotel.
