NIOBRARA COUNTY – Residents of Niobrara County gleefully entered a land of literacy on Saturday, June 28, when the Niobrara County Library held its an- nual book sale.
Both young and old turned out to pur- chase books from a collection that in- cluded romance, mystery, history, action, sci-fi, and everything in-between. The were also DVDs and CDs available for those craving digital items. While there was no charge for any of the mer- chandise, attendees were encouraged
to make donations to the library of any amount. According to Robin Johnson, the secretary for the Friends of the Nio- brara County Library, the event seems to always be a crowd pleaser.
“Some years are better than others,” Johnson told the Herald. “And every year where we think it wasn’t as good, it turns out to be better than the year before.”
The driving force behind the sale is the Friends of the Niobrara County Library, a support organization that was founded in 1990. Through the years, the organization has helped the library in a va- riety of ways. There is, for instance, the Reading is Fun program, which is held annually to promote reading among the area’s youth. There is also the Christmas Cookie and Candy Sale, held the first Wednesday of December
each year. Then there is the group’s participation in AmazonSmile, a phil- anthropic program that was conduct- ed by Amazon, the global leader in online retail. Recently, the Friends of the Niobrara County Library took up sponsorship of Dolly Parton’s Imagi- nation Library, which promotes litera- ture by donating books to young children free of charge.
For locals, however, it is the book sale, held at the end of June every year, that seems to be the most visible and significant event. Johnson says that this year, like the previous years, the public has been very generous with their donations to the sale.
“Everyone has been very consider- ate,” said Johnson.
The money raised at this year’s sale will go towards several library pro- grams and activities, including puppet presentations and appearances by a variety of different musicians and artists. The donations will also help bring back the library’s Foam Party, which was a smash hit among Niobrara County children last year. Expect to see the county’s little ones frolicking in the foam again on August 5.
