YODER - On a frigid Saturday afternoon Niobrara County High School traveled to face the defending state champion Lady Cyclones. Southeast showed every bit why they are still capable of hoisting another trophy with a 14-0 run to start the game.
MOORCROFT - Niobrara County High School took part in the large Dylan Humes Memorial tournament last weekend. Tiger junior Keen Coffman wrestled at 165 pounds and after six matches came away with fifth place. He split his first two with first period pins, while staying alive with two more victories. In another wrestleback, Coffman lost a scoring fest by a 25-15 major decision. In the fifth place match, he took a third period pin.
HANNA: After a 38 point rout over the Miners at the Lingle tournament last month, Friday’s hosts gave Lusk a much tougher game. Niobrara County High School trailed early and often, while Hanna-Elk Mountain proved up to the challenge. Brady Swisher buried a long triple before Corbin Matthews went down hard- and did not return, as the Tigers held a slim three point edge after one stanza. The Miners continued to work through the NCHS pressure and found themselves with a five point halftime lead.
DOUGLAS: Niobrara County High School’s wrestlers went to the Shane Shatto Memorial tournament last weekend and came home with 18 team points.
HANNA: Fresh off a tough win in Hemingford, Neb. Monday night, the Niobrara County High School girls basketball team headed West last Friday. The Lady Miners gave Lusk problems in Lingle last month, but with half a dozen treys it was a different story.
CHADRON, NEBRASKA : Lusk’s girls basketball team found the going tough during the consolation games at last week’s tournament across the border. On Tuesday afternoon, Niobrara County High School faced Chase County High School and kept it close despite a slew of turnovers. The Lady Longhorns held a thin two point edge after one but pushed the lead to double digits by the break.
LUSK: The Niobrara County School District Hall of Fame committee is in preparations for the fourth class of inductees to be honored this summer. This group has been selected to recognize the significant achievement and contributions of past alumni, staff members, or volunteers who made an impact on the Niobrara County School District. The Hall of Fame is not be limited to athletics, but is open to anyone who made a distinguished contribution to society.
CHADRON, NEBRASKA - The Niobrara County High School basketball teams entered new territory earlier this week with a holiday tournament at Chadron State College. The competition was tougher than many of Lusk’s first two tournaments with most of the schools involved having much larger enrollments than NCHS.
GUERNSEY: Niobrara County High School had a busy week on the hardwood that began last Tuesday at Viking Gym. The Tigers raced out to a 28-4 first quarter lead and never looked back. The usual pesky defense and balanced scoring led Lusk to a 41-8 halftime margin. The Tigers eased off in the second half and cruised to the 60-16 victory. Corbin Matthews and Joaquin Cassiano splashed three pointers to bookend the scoring.
GUERNSEY: The Lady Tigers opened conference play last Tuesday at Viking Gym. Lusk had quick baskets and led 10-4 after the first eight minutes. A strong second lifted Niobrara County High School to a 20 point lead at the half and another strong finish pushed Lusk to the 59-22 win.
UPTON: To tip off the new basketball season Niobrara County High School faced the team that beat them in last year’s state semi-finals. The host Bobcats are ranked second in the Wyopreps coaches and media preseason rankings while the Lusk boys are sitting in third place.
UPTON: Nine months after the Lady Bobcats eliminated Niobrara County High School from last year’s 1A state tournament, the teams met again to open the new campaign. Friday morning in Bobcat Gym the hosts took an early edge, but was able to open it up to 11 points at the break.
LUSK: Over a dozen boys and nine girls wrestling teams invaded Tiger Gym for nine hours last Friday. The Tiger Invitational has traditionally been one of the best opening weekend tournament for decades and last week was no exception.
LUSK: Now that the middle school horde of wrestlers have finished their season, the Niobrara County High School wrestling room will be much quieter. That doesn’t mean there won’t be the same intensity, but the team has very small numbers. Head coach TJ Hodge enters his second season and feels more comfortable despite just a handful of wrestlers.
LUSK: After a pair of top three finishes at state and nine letter winners returning, Niobrara County High School is on the short list of teams expected to challenge for the 1A boys basketball championship again. It’s a long season and a lot of good things need to happen over the next three months, but the Tigers are a confident bunch.
LUSK: Andie Hubbard’s second season leading the Niobrara County High School girls basketball team will certainly have a different look. Last season with four veteran seniors the Lady Tigers posted a 17-10 record and trip to the 1A State Tournament. But youth will be served early, with hopes of postseason runs again as the team gels.

CHEYENNE - The Lady Tiger cross country team made history on Saturday at Little America in Cheyenne. The five Lady Tigers ran as a team in NCHS uniforms and finished in 6th place as a team against a field of over 60 runners.
GREYBULL: Friday morning Niobrara County High School ventured to the Big Horn Basin for the first round of the 1A nine-man playoffs. The Tigers and Buffaloes met back in week three, with Lusk falling at home 50-24. By kickoff time at 6 p.m. the temperature dropped significantly, with NCHS putting up a good fight early on.
