GOSHEN COUNTY – Linus would have been pleased.

His continued search for the Great Pumpkin in the Peanuts comic strips could have come to fruition Saturday with the fourth annual Giant Pumpkin Contest, hosted by the Goshen County Master Gardeners.

A dozen pumpkins were on display in the Frontier Shelter on the Goshen County Fairgrounds for the event. Growers from around the area worked all summer, teasing and caring for the gigantic gourds in preparation for the weekend weigh-in.

And the winners were:

Adult division: First place, 512 pounds, Janet and Dale Martindale; second place, 407 pounds, Shirley Cotant, and; third place, 390 pounds, Curt Kenzy.

Childrens division: First place, 137 pounds, Zoey Weglin, and; second place, 61 pounds, Devon Bauman.

In addition to the weigh-in, the Master Gardeners provided pumpkins, paints and more for people to express their artistic side, decorating.

Annually, scores of contests around the country and around the world bring together hundreds of giant pumpkin growers to compete for prizes, including bragging rights for raising the biggest of the big. The Goshen County Giant Pumpkin Contest is not an “official” weigh-in event, said Linda Farrier, administrative assistant for the University of Wyoming Extension in Goshen County.

“It was a very successful day,” Farrier said. “I think a good time was had by all.”
