100 people were in attendance at the Meet the Candidate Forum held Monday night, April 30, 2018. The event, sponsored together by the Niobrara County High School government class and the Niobrara County Chamber, offered Lusk locals a chance to hear from their candidates what they envision their terms to be and how they plan to assist in the running of the Lusk government. In total, there are three candidates for Mayor including Doug Lytle, Pete Pier, and Thomas Bleming, there are five candidates for the four-year term Council Member seats wherein two will be voted in, including Becky Blackburn, Dean Nelson, Ed Tirado, Cal Carstensen, and Brandie Collins and finally, there are three candidates for the two-year term wherein one candidate will receive the seat, Tom Dooper, Lawrence Pavone Jr. and Sebastian Ochs. All of the candidates, excluding Ochs, were at the forum. The forum began at 7:00PM, the candidates had received questions from the government class that they had pre-prepared and the questions were asked by a member of the government class. Questions pertaining to being a Mayor went first to the Mayor candidates, where each candidate answered the same question. Questions were then posed to the Council Member candidates on being a Council Member and each candidate was given an opportunity to answer. After the pre-prepared questions, the government class then asked questions to each candidate individually. The candidate was unaware of what question they would receive until answer time. Finally, the floor was open for questions and those in the audience were able to address their concerns. Elections will be held at the church across from the Town Hall on May 8 from 7:00AM-7:00PM; all eligible voters are encouraged to vote. Absentee voting is going on now, any eligible voter wanting to vote absentee can contact the Town Hall and request a ballot be mailed or can stop into the Town Hall to pick up a ballot. Absentee Ballots must be returned no later than May 7, 2018 at 1:00PM.
