VFW Auxiliary gather to assemble wreaths

Posted

LUSK – Members of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Auxiliary No. 3511 of Lusk gathered Thursday evening, May 5, in the kitchen of member Phyllis Hahn, to assemble Memorial Day wreaths using Buddy Poppies, which were available for donations on May 21 by Terry Allbright’s True Value Store.

Each wreath is different, reflecting amazing artistic skills of members, with some built on straw bases and others on foam. The patriotic wreaths featured the Buddy Poppies, while some have flowers, ribbons and other embellishments in red, white and/or blue, and were displayed in the downtown window of the Police Station prior to that date. Funds raised with Poppy projects are directed to veterans (hospitals, medical needs through the VA, etc.) and to help youth develop patriotism. Members spent the evening visiting as they worked, and included the President of VFW Aux. No. 3511 Cindy Starkey, and members Phyllis Hahn, Evelyn Perry, Trish Eaton, Patricia Smith and Sandra Smith. Unusual wintry temperatures greeted the VFW members who braved the day on Friday, May 21, as they took donations for wreaths and hothouse vegetable starter plants.
