LUSK – It is no secret that Wyoming’s uncharacteristically mild winter produced very little moisture. The parched, brown landscape surrounding Niobrara County portends an exceedingly dry summer. Of course, such conditions are especially hospitable to fire, that ravenous force that can consume any combustible material if left uncontained. So, it is only natural that looming July 4 celebrations are sparking (no pun intended) some concern. Among those voicing such concerns is Lusk resident Leslie Lemons, who believes the exceptionally arid terrain could be set ablaze by an uncontrolled fireworks display.

MANVILLE – Fireworks, parade, and BBQ are what one can expect during the town of Manville’s annual 4th of July celebration.

LUSK - Wind turbines, AI centers, illegal immigration, and preservation of Wyoming’s core industries were just some of the hot-button topics tackled at a meet-and-greet with Wyoming Secretary of State Chuck Gray on Thursday, June 18. The event, which was held at the Niobrara County Fairgrounds, provided county residents with a chance to learn more about Gray’s current bid for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Gray hopes to replace Harriet Hageman as she seeks to win a race for the U.S. Senate. The current Wyoming Secretary of State went around the room and asked attendees to share the two issues they consider to be most important in this year’s election.

ALANTA, GEORGIA - Seven students representing Niobrara County SkillsUSA traveled to Atlanta, Georgia, to compete in the 2026 National Leadership and Skills Conference, held June 1–6. The students entered three competitions: the team of Braxton Hodge, Cody Yeager, and Leighton Single competed in the Community Service category; Will Kruse, Lane Clark, and Tyke Coffman entered the American Spirit competition; and Addi Lytle was the chapter’s only individual competitor, entering the T-Shirt Design contest.

LUSK – The Tiger Plunge Swimming Pool was in full swing on opening day, June 6, with over 116 patrons starting out the first day and five lifeguards on duty. Joyce Hammer returned as pool manager and reports she is glad to be back. This year, Rachel Walker is the assistant manager.

NIOBRARA COUNTY - Along the stretch of U.S. Highway 20 where the Wyoming plains begin their final roll toward the Nebraska border, there exists a community that defies the modern definition of a "ghost town." While many frontier settlements of the late 19th century have vanished into the sagebrush, Van Tassell remains an incorporated entity, holding the title of the least populous town in the nation’s least populous state.

NIOBRARA COUNTY – Niobrara County Commissioners have been kicking around ideas of what to do with the old jail by the Niobrara County Courthouse. After a long, hard look at the difficult balance between historical context and county expenses, the commissioners have decided, mindful of what the community has said they would like to see happen and of the costs and expenses to the county.

LUSK – As the old aphorism goes, one man's junk is another man's treasure; this is exactly what Lusk Elementary/Middle School (LEMS) is hoping for their garage and bake sale on June 27 at LEMS.
