NHS welcomes new members

LUSK – Scholarship, leadership, service and character. These are the pillars of the National Honor Society (NHS). In order to be considered for membership students must show exemplary performance in these four areas and provide documentation with their application.

The National Honor Society was established in 1921. It is estimated that more than 1 million students participate in NHS activities and chapters are found in all fifty states, Canada, US Territories and even internationally. NHS awards students for their achievements and also encourages them to continue a tradition of service in their communities.

Students become eligible to apply to their local chapter of NHS after a minimum of 3 semesters of high school (grades 10-12), and have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale and be able to show documentation and letters of recommendation to speak to their leadership, character and service. Each individual chapter may set more rigorous standards at their discretion.

Most local chapters require a certain number of hours of community service, specific leadership requirements and letters of reference for character.

Niobrara County High School had eight inductees into their chapter for the 2022-2023 school year. The ceremony was held on December 5 at the high school. Students and parents assembled to honor these students.
